This year we have added several new activities, including ice-skating,
a game night at the Boys & Girls Club. Also be on the lookout
for new and exciting discounts and coupons.
For
more than a decade, UCAT has offered students a safe and healthy alternative
during spring break with its Spring Break-Michigan Style program.
The week-long event has seen much success within Utica Community Schools
boundaries, offering activities for students who chose to stay closer
to home rather than escape to warmer yet unfamiliar climates this
time of year.
This fun alternative for area students in seventh through 12th grade
allows kids the chance to participate in activities as well as take
advantage of numerous discounts - just for choosing their hometowns
as their spring break destination of choice.
"It's a healthy alternative program offered during spring break
in collaboration with local businesses, schools and other organizations,"
UCAT President Kim Wiegand said. "We're giving kids opportunities
to have fun other than going out of state or other places."
Students who stay in Macomb County during the week are invited to
discounts on bowling, car washes, food and skating. For the last few
years, the coalition has partnered with Life Time Fitness to offer
a wider variety of activities for students, including discounts at
its Life Cafe and Life Spa.
Throughout
the week, Life Time Fitness offers club activities such as open gym,
swimming and rock wall climbing. Different classes are also offered,
ranging from hip hop dance and kickboxing, to spinning and Pilates.
An all-night party is scheduled for Friday at Lifetime Fitness, as
well. The overnight event includes classes and activities, food and
more.
"We hope (this) would provide students with healthy alternatives
to enjoy during the week, but also enjoy at home with friends,"
Wiegand said. "We hope (through Spring Break-Michigan Style)
they build ties with their friends and the community, and have opportunities
to participate in activities you know are safe and could be fun, as
opposed to being out of the country not knowing what's going to happen
next."
Students who attend Spring Break-Michigan Style events must have a
student ID card or current report card for admission. Students are
also allowed to bring friends from other districts with a valid school
ID.
